This should be a fucking Public Service Announcement. Honest to god Anime and Manga is not something you openly talk about and admit to liking in Japan. If your Foreign and an Otaku your even lower on the god damn pole . Japan isn’t some fucking place you can openly play out some dumb weeaboo fantasy in fact no one will talk to your ass if your like that.
On a somewhat related note, at both of the Dir en grey concerts I went to (and that’s 4 years apart, mind you) there were a stupid amount of people like this. At the show last week, some girls showed up in gothic lolita dresses, a guy walked in with a Rurouni Kenshin jacket on along with a few other bits of anime accessories, and at the one 4 years ago I spotted 2 people in elaborate cosplay.
It’s utterly baffling to me as to why these people do this. The only thing Dir en grey has in common with gothic lolita is that they’re both Japanese - that’s it. The fact that they deem this an appropriate connection to act on is embarrassing to themselves and, in my opinion, offensive to the band. Dir en grey are defined by their music, not by the fact that they are Japanese. What about this music is inherently “Japanese” other than the fact that it’s spoken in Japanese?
To show up dressed in a flamboyant attempt to show off your otaku pride or whatever says to me that you only like this band because they’re Japanese, which is idiotic. It’s as if these people think to themselves, “Oh, I’m going to a Japanese concert today, so I must therefore act Japanese.” No; you’re going to a concert that happens to feature a band that are Japanese and that’s it. Leave your anime apparel at home because it has nothing to do with this.
Like the comic says, there’s nothing wrong with liking anime or lolita dresses, just don’t force your fantasy where it doesn’t belong - you’re ruining my concert.
